Region 6 of the Murray Darling system, where the River meets the Ocean, is located in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula at the end of the River Murray.
It incorporates riverside towns such as Goolwa, Milang, Meningie, Murray Bridge, East Wellington, Tailem Bend and Narrung, as well as the Limestone Coast down to Kingston S.E. It also includes the productive Angas Bremer Basin.
The River Murray flows from the north into the vast, shallow Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, known as the Lower Lakes. It then weaves through a series of channels and acts as a gateway to the iconic Coorong National Park, home to an abundance of native flora and fauna.
The area is nationally recognised as the location of the Murray Mouth, a dynamic system influenced by the flow of river water flowing through strategically-built barrages from the north, and tidal movements from the Southern Ocean. The significance of the Murray Mouth to the Murray-Darling system is undeniable; the only way to get rid of salt from the Basin is by high enough flows (or a flood) from the River Murray flowing out through the Murray Mouth.
Maintaining an open mouth is a key objective outlined in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. Periods of low flow and drought has resulted in continual dredging to ensure the Murray Mouth stays open. It is important that the mouth remains open to maintain connectivity between the river, the Coorong and the Southern Ocean, to discharge salt and other nutrients out to sea, and to maintain healthy ecosystems in the Coorong.
